THE final round of the Herefordshire Cross County series was held in the woods above Presteigne on a crisp, frosty morning. It was a fast course with occasional steep climbs into the woods.

The winner and overall champion was Matt James (Hereford Couriers) but Croft Ambrey's Stacey Morgan was a bare minute behind in fifth, closely followed by Simon Norwood (Ludlow Runners). Nigel Mason (12th, 42.29) and Dave Moss (13th, 42.58) both ran well with Dan Barnett finishing 19th (44.58), not quite able to catch Ludlow Runners' over 50s champion, Mick Ligema. This secured third place for the Croft A team.

Pat Pearson, Richard Hornsby, Simon Powney and Dave George packed well to bring the B team home in seventh. Guy Whitmarsh, Bill Layton, Jon Utley and Demetris Charalambou were close behind, giving the C team 10th place. Ollie May, Gary Gunner, Neil Taylor, Dave Rouse and Tom Davies also ran.

In the ladies' race, Suzanne Turvey, 17, burst through to finish fourth out of 35 runners leaving mum, Nicky, well in her wake in 14th.

Gary Gunner was given the county over 60 award, Nicky Turvey was second in the over 45 section, Ollie May second junior man and Suzanne Turvey third in the under 18.

In the recent Clee Hill race, three Croft runners competed: Pat Pearson was 20th (24.53), Guy Whitmarsh was 33rd (26.17) and Gary Gunner, 37th (27.49).

THE juniors of Ludlow Runners continue to bring good results with their running. The highlights include the Under 15 team Gold at the County Championships. Cerian Lancaster gained a gold and Guy Turner a bronze.

Under 17 Boys: 4th Matthew Trounson, Selected Shropshire Inter-Counties.

Under 13 Girls: 12th Katherine Lovejoy.

Under 17 Girls: 1st Cerian Lancaster, Selected Shropshire Inter-Counties; 4th Megan Lloyd, Selected Shropshire Inter-Counties.

Shropshire Schools Championships Year 7 Girls: 10th Megan Turner, Selected Shropshire Schools.

Year 7 Boys: 8th Oliver Preece, Selected Shropshire Schools.

Year 8/9 Girls: 24th Katherine Lovejoy.

Year 8/9 Boys: 6th Russell Adams, Selected Shropshire Schools; 10th Guy Gregory, Selected Shropshire Schools; 40 Chris Walker.

Year 10/11: Tom Everett, Selected Shropshire Schools.

Cerian, Zara and Megan were all unable to compete because of illness.
