Extra-time defeat brings Clee Hill’s Junior Vase run to disappointing end
Rolls Royce 21pts Clee Hill 15 (after extra time).
CLEE Hill's excellent run in the EDF Junior Vase came to an end in the fifth round on Saturday, when they went down to a speculative drop-goal and penalty in extra time at Derby.
After conceding seven points straight from the kick-off, Clee Hill more than held their own for the remainder of the game and, with more support than the home side, looked to be the favourites going into extra time.
They enjoyed plenty of the play during the extra 10 minutes each way, but failed to add to their tally of points.
From fewer opportunities, the home side managed to kick a drop-goal from just inside the Clee half and then added a penalty five minutes from time.
In normal time, the home side's flanker caught the ball from the first kick-off, and ran through a hesitant Hill defence to touchdown and, with the conversion, put them seven points up.
The visitors settled down and took the lead with two tries. Robert Fletcher peeled off the back of a scrum to reduce the deficit and then Steve Jones went in to make the score 10-7.
A penalty to the home side sent the teams in level at the interval.
The works side regained the lead with an unconverted try during the early stages of the second half.
The Hill attacked for the majority of the half but were only able to breach the home defence once. That was when Fletcher took a quick, tapped penalty to score his second try and extended the tie into extra time.
