Lower-rated Wem too hot for Town
Ludlow Town 0 Wem 3.
LUDLOW rounded off a poor Christmas and New Year spell with a disappointing quarter-final defeat against Wem at the SBS Stadium in the Shropshire County Cup, their third loss over the festive period.
Town have struggled to field their best side during this period with injuries, work commitments and holidays robbing them of six players for Saturday's tie.
Lower-graded Wem were fired up for the tie and posed problems for the home side during the early stages of the game. Town weathered the storm and enjoyed plenty of the first half play, but were unable to make a breakthrough.
The tie was decided within five minutes of the restart, the Wem centre-forward scoring twice with two contrasting strikes.
There was an element of luck with his first speculative effort from 25 yards which looped over the home keeper who was off his line. His second was a fine turn and drive into the top corner.
Ludlow plugged away but failed to force their way back into the tie. They became more desperate in the closing stages and Wem added a third goal to leave Ludlow well beaten.
Town's two West Midlands League fixtures, both against Shropshire sides who are in the top five in the Premier Division, ended in defeat.
The game at The SBS on the Saturday before Christmas ended in a 2-0 defeat to Ellesmere Rangers. They travelled to Shawbury between Christmas and New Year and came home on the wrong end of a 3-0 result. Town are hoping to be closer to full strength when they travel to play Gornal Athletic on Saturday.
