Town march on after extra time
Ludlow Town 3 Drayton Reserves 2 (after extra time).
AFTER dominating most of the game, Ludlow needed extra time to reach the next round of the Shropshire Senior County Cup after letting the visitors off the hook in normal time.
Town were in charge from the start and took the lead midway through the first half. Liam Turner unleashed a screamer from just outside the box giving the Reserves keeper little chance. They had chances to extend the lead but failed to tuck them away.
It was a similar story after the break, with the home side hitting both the post and the crossbar, but failing to kill the game off. Market Drayton made them pay the penalty by grabbing an equaliser midway through the second half, and were suddenly rejuvinated, forcing the pace during the next ten minutes of play.
The game went into extra-time and the home side seized control with two quick goals. Dean Richards crossed from the right for Marcus Sherrad to convert to put them back in front.
Soon after Sherrad turned provider, laying the ball into the path of Dan Tolley, who duly put daylight between the sides. Things were going well until the final five minutes when the referee over-ruled his assistant to award the visitors a dubious penalty. They hit the back of the net with the spot-kick to reduce the deficit and set up a lively end to the tie.
Town held on to sneak a win in a game that should have been a stroll. Next Saturday Town return to league action at Wednesfield.
