Tenbury Rugby Club captain Pete Stevens salutes 'heroes' after 35-10 win over Warley in Midlands Junior Vase
Tenbury 35 pts Warley 10
TENBURY captain Pete Stevens says he cannot ask for any more effort from his players after they romped into the third round of the Midlands Junior Vase.
Stevens’ side were not troubled against their Oldbury-based opponents in Saturday’s second-round battle at Palmer’s Meadow.
“They are all heroes and are playing out of their skins,” said Stevens.
“We had a good warm-up and the lads were all geared up.
“We knew that they had a big, strong pack and would shift the ball around, but we started off really strong and it was a very good win.
“I’m pleased with everybody - they were all brilliant.”
Tenbury got off to a flyer and were 7-0 up after only 10 minutes - Richard Smith scoring a try, which was converted by Alex Brazier.
The Palmer’s Meadow men then took control of the game and five minutes later they extended their lead when scrum-half Andrew Wilkes went under the posts, with Brazier again converting.
Warley did get on the scoresheet when they bagged a penalty, but by half-time it was 20-3 to Tenbury, with Brazier grabbing two penalties himself.
At that stage there was only going to be one winner and, even though Warley scored a converted try, which followed yet another Brazier penalty, it was Tenbury who went on to comfortably win the game, with further tries coming from Luke Brittain and Richard Wozencroft - the latter’s sixth in six games.
“Our forwards have been amazing, but our number 10 Ben King had a particularly great game,” added a delighted Stevens.
“He has g reat strength and passing ability and has really stepped up to the mark.”
Tenbury resume their league programme this Saturday with a home Midlands Four West (North) match against high-flying Telford Hornets.
“All I ask from the team is a bit more of the same, right from the forwards to the backs,” said Stevens.
“I am very pleased with them all and can’t ask for much more.
