Tenbury boxers team up with Birmingham to represent England in Ireland
9:00am Thursday 27th September 2012 in Sport By Ian Morgan
SIX Tenbury Wells boxers will be flying to Ireland next weekend to fight for national pride in a prestigious sell-out show.
Tenbury Boxing Club’s head coach and founder, Martin ‘Paddy’ Brennan, says his fighters will be treated like celebrities in the province of Munster.
Eddie ‘Boom Boom’ Kelly, Connor ‘the Hammer’ Huntbach, Jake ‘Raging Bull’ Fergusson, ‘Gorgeous’ George Sloan, Tommy ‘Gun’ Jane and Robbie ‘The Terminator’ Gittens will be arriving in Waterford, on Friday, October 4.
They will be teaming up with eight boxers from Birmingham to represent England against Ireland in a sell-out amateur show in Dungarvan on October 5.
And whatever happens inside the ring, Tenbury will be hosting the return battle on March 29, 2013.
“It’s going to be our first outing of the season and a hard, competitive match,” said Paddy, who fought for England in Jersey in 1989.
Brennan added: “Our lads will give their all for Tenbury and I can guarantee that the Irish team will have to work hard to beat our boys.
“The Irish team have been picked and matched against our lads and will no doubt be in good form.
“Tickets for the show have already sold out.”
The boxers from Birmingham are managed by Paddy’s old trainer Frank Sullivan OBE.
Paddy said the squad will be flying out from Birmingham on the Friday and will be met in Waterford by Irish television and the media.
“We will be introduced to people in Waterford and then taken to our hotel where we will be shown the best hospitality that Waterford has to offer,” Brennan said.
Paddy said the twinning fighters will be awarded gold medals and vests. “All our coaches and parents of the boxers will be going to help with the preparation and to give support,” he said.
“Our child welfare officer, Liz Boland, will be there to make sure our lads have the best possible care.”
Paddy thanked The Vaults public house for sponsoring the vests and the Shamraj Balti House for their continued support.
