Ludlow captain Louis Watkins set to head for Australia
LOUIS Watkins led Ludlow Cricket Club to fifth place in the league - but he could be on the other side of the world next summer.
The 21-year-old enjoyed his first season in the Ludlow captain’s role but he is hoping to go to Australia in January for a year.
The Canon Frome all-rounder has been working nights at Sainsbury’s supermarket in Hereford since the middle of the cricket season to help fund his trip.
“I am hoping to go to Australia in January for 12 months so I won’t be around next season,” said Watkins, who topped Ludlow’s bowling averages.
“I am not sure who is going to be captain at Ludlow next season,” added Watkins, who says Dave Proctor is also planning to go to Australia.
Ludlow made a slow start to the rain-hit season before finishing fifth in the Shropshire County League Premier Division.
The club held their awards evening at The Burway on Saturday.
“The season went quite well in the end but the first half was hard work,” said Watkins, Ludlow’s leading wicket-taker with 31 league victims at 14.81.
Aussie bowler Chris Elliot snapped up 23 wickets at 13.87 and Joe Maiden took 21 at 25.86.
Watkins said the Simmons brothers, Ian and Bryn, had been influential during the summer, scoring 431 runs and 374 runs, respectively.
“We needed to give each other quite a bit of time as a team - it was a hard league and a much tougher league than the previous season.
“It’s easy being captain you’re winning but you have to dig in when you’re not doing so well.”
He added: “Sam Edwards was helping me during the season and I want to say a huge thank-you to him.”
