Bishop's Castle brave but Tenbury take the points

Bishop’s Castle 5 pts Tenbury 10.

CASTLE skipper Pete Bevan praised the bravery of his team after they crashed to a late defeat against Tenbury in Midlands Four West (North).

Bevan’s fifth-minute try, from a rolling maul, put Castle ahead and they held the lead until the 75th minute when Tenbury scored a converted touchdown. Castle’s agony was compounded when rivals Tenbury sealed their derby triumph with a last-gasp penalty.

Barry Conde hurt his shoulder and played through the pain barrier, while Keith Cox and Pete Hughes left the field with injuries and later returned to the fray.

“We only started with 16 players and one had to leave at half-time because he had to go to work,” said Bevan. “Keith and Pete went off with injuries and we played with 13 players at one point. They both came back on despite being injured.”

He added: “The commitment and tackling was superb but it was a bit of a sickener to lose it at the end.”

Castle are without a match this Saturday because former skipper Mark Davies is getting married. The club are now preparing for their vice-presidents’ day which takes place at the home match with Cannock on October 6.
