Brace of tries for Ben Howman but Cleobury Mortimer beaten at Wednesbury

BEN Howman scored a brace of tries in Cleobury Mortimer’s 35-20 opening-day defeat at Wednesbury in Midlands Three West (North).

Allan Shields also bagged a try for Cleobury, while Ed Lewis kicked a penalty and a conversion for the visitors, who trailed 15-3 at the interval. Former skipper Hylton Smith said Cleobury’s side contained eight players aged under 19 years.

Bishop’s Castle captain Pete Bevan remained upbeat after his depleted side crashed 50-14 at Market Drayton in Midlands Four West (North).

Castle were trailing 14-7 at the interval and ran out of steam in the second-half of their first match. Dave Cooper and Jack Holloway crossed the whitewash for Castle and they were awarded a penalty-try.

“We have a lot of farmers in our side and, because of the excellent weather, they were working,” said Bevan.

“We only had 12 players on Friday night so we did well to get a team together.”
