Ludlow Hockey Club back in action in Super Cup at Much Wenlock

LUDLOW Hockey Club return to action this Saturday in the men’s Super Cup tournament.

Players from Church Stretton, Ludlow, and Craven and Clee are competing in the event which starts at Much Wenlock at 1.15pm.

Competition for places will be fierce with more than 50 potential squad members.

Ludlow ladies’ first-team are also playing on Saturday, against Old Sillhillians Ladies 2nd at Solihull at 11.30am.

This season, the ladies’ team, for the first time ever, will be participating in the top Worcestershire Hockey League.

Captain Annette Burgoyne welcomes new players and looks forward to last year’s players coming to pre-season training.

And, for the first time in more than 20 years, the men’s section will be fielding three teams as well as a boys’ under-15 Badgers’ side on Saturdays.

Josh Atherton, Andrew Richards, Matthew Hall and Calum Beaumont have returned from universities.

James Pratt, Vijay Chumber, and Dave Good have come back from injury and spells with bigger clubs.

Last year’s second team captain, Aaron Wilcox, has come back from the USA and the arrival of Richard Bell, a former England Schoolboy international, will add strength.

The club continues to use the astroturf surface at Much Wenlock as a home ground. However, the opening of a new half pitch at Moor Park School will allow the club to train locally. But they are unable to play 11-a-side matches in Ludlow.

Club Training at Moor Park School, under the direction of new chairman, Chris Beaumont, will be starting on Wednesday, September 26.
