A BATTLING innings from Rob Genner (47) could not save Ludlow from a 46-run opening-day home defeat against Bomere Heath in the Shropshire County League Premier Division.
In reply to Bomere’s 184-8, Genner, Sam Edwards (37), Bryn Simmons (15) and Will Sparrow (13) battled but Ludlow were dismissed for 138 in 40.3 overs.
Stevens brought about Ludlow’s downfall with a match-winning 6-38 haul.
Earlier, Ian Gillespie (88 not out) carried his bat for Bomere against good bowling from Sparrow (3-35) and newcomer Joe Maiden (3-46).
Corvedale slipped to a 20-run defeat against visiting Pontesbury in a low-scoring Division Two match.
Edward Riley (3-29), Nick Giles (2-13), Edward Williams (2-17) and Ross Mantle (2-36) combined to bowl out Pontesbury for 143 in 40 overs.
Mantle top scored with 26 but Corvedale slipped to 123 all out in 33.1 overs.
James Kinder took 3-40 but Ludlow 3rd suffered a five-wicket home defeat against Hales in Division Five.
There was also disappointment for Ludlow 4th who lost by three wickets in an exciting match at Madeley 3rd in Division Six.
Richard Whately struck a dogged 36 for Bishop’s Castle 2nd who lost by three wickets against Cae Glas 2nd in a low-scoring 2nd XI Division Three battle.
