ROBERT Watkins says he’s ‘delighted and excited’ about his new head professional role at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club.

Watkins replaces Tim Hall, who has joined Ross-on-Wye GC, and was the successful candidate from more than 70 applicants.

“I am delighted to be joining the team at Cleobury Mortimer,” said Watkins. “It’s a really exciting opportunity for me, and one that I could never pass on.”

Watkins holed the new role after Cleobury had received more than 70 applications and held 10 interviews.

Cleobury spokesman Graham Pain said: “We were looking for a professional who could work with the ambitious and dynamic team at the club to give the members and visitors to the club the first-class service they have come to expect.”

Watkins worked for six years at the prestigious Celtic Manor resort in Newport, which hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup. He played golf for Gloucestershire as a member of Forest Hills club in the Forest of Dean.

Watkins turned professional and completed his PGA foundation Degree in Golf from Birmingham University, while training at The Celtic Manor.

He was a top trainee for the West Region during his training and was first in his golf coaching exams in his final year.

Graham Pain added: “Robert is passionate about coaching and has written and developed coaching programmes for all levels of golfer.

“His ability and understanding of club fitting is particularly strong, as he has had specialist training with Ping and Titleist, including being selected for a workshop with the legendary Bob Vokey.”
