THE Moran family have roared their way to a new record-breaking chapter in the MSA British Hillclimb Championship.

Roger and Scott Moran, from Orleton, are the first father and son pairing to finish in the top-two places in the competition’s 64- year history.

Scott, 35, clinched his third British Hillclimb title in August.

And, dad Roger, 59, secured the runners-up spot after winning a round in the final race of the season at Loton Park.

“I don’t think it’s ever happened in any British motorsport championship before where the father and son have finished in first and second,” said Scott.

“We were involved in 24 wins out of the 34 races,”

said Scott, whose mum, Helen, wife Debbie and 15- month-old son Oliver celebrated at Loton Park.

“We race in the same car and it has been reliable.

“It’s been a good year and we have had a lot of support from family, friends and the Swift Group.”

Scott previously won the title in 2008 and 2009 and was the runner-up in 2010.

Roger won the title in 1997.

“My dad started in 1989 and I started as soon as I was old enough to drive six years later,” said Scott.

“We’ve got friendly rivalry - we don’t show each other any favours.

“But, at Loton Park, I stood down from the first race to give my dad a run.

“I wouldn’t have been very popular if I had come off and damaged the car.”

Hillclimbing is one of the oldest forms of motorsport and drivers race against the clock to complete an uphill course.

The Morans, who run a motorhome company in Ludlow, have been racing in the same car – a single seater Gould GR61X with a Nicholson McLaren engine - since 2005.

“Hillclimb is tremendous fun and it’s very exciting,”

said Scott. “Even if you’re not winning you have your personal best to aim for.

“We can go from 0-60 in two seconds and, on one course, we can reach a speed of 140 mph in five seconds.

“We run for about a minute - so it’s pretty much all or nothing.

“We race for a total of five or six minutes a weekend and sometimes it takes longer to load the truck.”

Scott says he enjoys the various tracks.

“I like all of the courses on our circuit but, for pure adrenaline, it’s got to be Doune in Scotland,” he said. “The most fun course is at Harewood near Leeds and the best atmosphere is at Shelsley Walsh.

“We will be doing the same again next year and it would be fantastic to get the same result.”
