Tenbury title-hopes hit as Barnards Green hand out 10-wicket battering

Tenbury Wells 138 Barnards Green 3rd 142-0.

TENBURY’S title hopes took a severe blow on Saturday when they were demolished by Barnards Green thirds at Newland Swan in Division 4 South of the Crusader Worcestershire County League. They slipped to fifth-place in the table.

While Tenbury can look back on losing the toss as a factor in their defeat - the wicket was green after rain the previous day - they failed to help their own cause with three of their key wickets falling to run-out decisions.

Will Gough and Ben Thompson (11) were progressing along quite nicely when Thompson was out with the score on 26 after attempting a suicidal second run. Jay da Costa’s innings of 19 was cut short at 51 by a stunning catch.

The middle order was blown away, with the score slipping to 86-6 including a second run-out, plus the wicket of Gough (30). Ed Corfield and skipper Jon Pearson were turning the situation around when a third run out accounted for Corfield (12).

Pearson struggled on but the visitors were bowled out in the 39th over, with the captain running out of partners. Off-spinner Simon Clarke took five wickets.

When the home side batted, Andy Wheeler had an early life. He was dropped in the third over, but made Tenbury suffer afterwards. He finished up two short of his century when Green strolled home in the 22nd over without losing a wicket.

l Tenbury 2nd also slipped up when Barnards Green 4th ran out six-wicket winners at Penlu after the home side were bowled out for 160.
