Battling Stretton foiled by visitors’ last-wicket pair

Church Stretton 212-5 Wellington 3rd 151-9.

THE Wellington last-wicket pair held out for two overs to deny home side Church Stretton an outright win in their FBC Manby Bowdler Shropshire League Division 2 clash.

With rain predicted, the game was restricted to 40 overs. Stretton struck out boldly when they batted first. Saif Khalid (21) was the early run-maker and when he was dismissed, at 40-2, it brought Jake Nichols in to join his brother Ben.

The pair put the home side in a strong position with a century stand, with Ben eventually going for 66 and Jake, 61.

Martin Nichols (4-41) and Ed Smith (3-41) picked up wickets when Wellington batted. Only Benting (36) of the top-order scored runs and, at 70-7, the home side appeared to be heading for a win.

With six overs to go rain held up play for 20 minutes. It cleared and the visitors lost two more wickets, one a stunning one-handed catch by Ben Nichols. The last-wicket pair held on to claim the draw.
