Woofferton 0 Westfields 3.
WOOFFERTON failed in their bid to reach their first ever HFA County Senior Challenge Cup Final when they went down to Westfields' Midland Football Alliance side in the semi final at Aynall Lane on Saturday. This was their sixth appearances in the semi final.
Having recorded big wins over fellow Hereford Times Herefordshire League sides Leominster Town and Bartestree in the previous rounds, they found their higher-graded visitors a much stiffer test.
With a strong wind in their faces in the first half, Woofferton started well and, indeed, might have taken the lead. Stuart Millichamp attacked down the left flank and forced John Pugh to make a good save.
They conceded three goals in a 10 minute spell and never recovered. Chris Jefferson flicked the ball past Dave Cooper to put Westfields in front after 20 minutes, Simon Gwilliam stretched the lead five minutes later when his shot took a big deflection to deceive the keeper. Leading marksman Mark Davis made it three on the half-hour when slack marking left the striker with a simple tap-in at the back post.
Woofferton looked a lot more comfortable in the second half when the elements were in their favour. They held the visitors attack, but were unable to seriously threaten a Westfields defence, who were quite happy to sit back on their lead.
After over a month long spell of cup action, Woofferton have fallen behind with their Premier Division Programme, and slipped back in the title race. During this time Sutton and Ewyas Harold have strung together an impressive string of results.
They begin a busy spell with a game against Hinton at Broomy Hill on Saturday.
