LUDLOW warmed up for the start of the league season this weekend with an emphatic 42-10 North Midlands Shield victory at Old Saltleians.

Ludlow went ahead within ten minutes as Joe Doyle made a clean break through the centre and had the strength to roll from his tackler to pop a pass to fly half Keiron Pinches to dot down. Will Sparrow converted.

Salts replied with a penalty but Ludlow soon scored again, Sparrow collecting a lovely miss pass by Pinches at speed and also converting his try.

Old Salts had a player yellow carded early in the second half for a late tackle on Sparrow.

The resulting penalty led to the best try of the match with the Ludlow back row of Harry Small, Charlie Doyle and James Adams combining for the latter to score under the posts.

From then on the traffic was one-way with Dan Ruell flying down the wing to score twice.

On the other wing, Tom Amphlett's pace caused Salts problems and his inside pass to Doyle gave Ludlow another try before the hosts bagged a late consolation.
