SHROPSHIRE over-50s were edged out by Wales in a final over thriller at Swansea in their first league game of the season.

Openers Ed Home (37) and Tony Parton (36) gave them a solid start and the visitors reached 75 before the first wicket fell.

Shropshire were finally dismissed for 179 with skipper Bryan Jones and Chris Dirkin both hitting 25 and Darren Shimmons 21.

Calvin Priest then put Wales on the back foot as he claimed 3-15 from his nine overs and the home side looked in trouble at 98-6. But Wales held on to claim a four-wicket victory with four balls to spare.

Henry Walker bagged five wickets as Shropshire under-12s began their season with an eight-wicket victory over Herefordshire.

Good bowling from Josh McDonald, Oliver Parton and Jovan Uppal paved the way for Walker’s 5-25 with good support coming from skipper Jonathan Bland (2-10) as Herefordshire were dismissed for 88.

In reply, opener Freddie Timmis hit 53 from 54 balls before he retired as Shropshire eased to victory.

Shropshire’s Women lost to Staffordshire in spite of a lively 27 off 34 balls from Robyn Matthews.
