LUDLOW School finished as runners-up in the Shropshire Schools Bunbury Under-12s final despite a courageous show against Packwood Haugh.

Chasing an imperious 196 for one, Ludlow (pictured) could only muster 91 for six with man-of-the-match Jack Condliffe’s 55 not enough to inspire his side to the silverware.

Packwood, who saw Freddie Timmis (55*), George Stanford-Davis (55) and William Goodall (50*) hit half centuries, will represent the county in the national rounds of the competition next year.

Shropshire’s Disability S9 squad fell agonisingly short of victory when they took on Yorkshire in the picturesque venue of Clumber Park.

Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bat first after hitting 194 against Shropshire in the return fixture earlier in the season.

But Shropshire bowled and fielded brilliantly to dismiss their hosts for just 77 in the 26th over as veteran Dave Hassall (3-10) and Gareth Teggin (3-10) led the way, with two of the wickets down to great pieces of keeping from Dave Ingram.

However, the visitors’ early batting failed to fire again until a spirited seventh-wicket partnership between Andy Billington and Scot Winton took the side to the brink of victory.

But when they were then both dismissed in quick succession, Shropshire were bowled out five runs short of their target.

Coach Graham Furber said: "This latest defeat just about sums up our S9 season as regards our batting – to have performed so brilliantly in bowling out Yorkshire for 77 and then to lose by just five runs was so disappointing for the squad.”

The S9s complete their programme with a home game against Derbyshire at Market Drayton CC a week on Sunday.
