FOUR wins out of four saw St Laurence School from Ludlow claim the Year 6 Girls’ Shropshire Primary School Schools Kwik Cricket crown.

They were one of five schools from around the Shropshire taking part at Shrewsbury Cricket Club and the trophy was presented by England Academy player Evelyn Jones from Whitchurch.

Poor weather had hit the qualifying tournaments and 50 girls took part in finals day representing schools from Worfield, Pontesbury, Radrook and Trinity Ford in addition to the eventual winners.

Jim Roberts, who organised the competition on behalf of Cricket Shropshire, said: “St Laurence were worthy champions on the day, winning all their games by scoring runs consistently and losing very few wickets.”

The tournament was played as a round-robin format and St Laurence made a great start with a 56-run victory over Radbrook.

After taking a break, St Laurence returned to the action in round three with a 30-run victory over Pontesbury and they then beat Worfield by 29 runs.

The final round of matches saw the Ludlow youngsters confirm their champion status with a 54-run triumph over Trinity Ford.

Radbrook clinched the runners-up spot by virtue of having the highest run average of the teams which finished with two wins.

“All the games were played in the best of spirit and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone taking part,” Roberts added.

“Many thanks to Shrewsbury CC for hosting the final and to Bill Davies and Alan Hughes for their help in making the day a success.

"Also, a big thank you to all the coaches who umpired, scored and coached the children on their batting, bowling and fielding throughout the day.”
