SEVERAL Ludlow Castle Motor Club members travelled to Builth Wells to take part in one of a number of rallies running over the same stages.

The Nicky Grist 100 Stages was a round of the Prestone MSA British Rally Championship and run over two days – the first over the gravel in the Crychan Forest and the second on Epynt’s asphalt stages.

Co-driver Phil Clarke was alongside Llandudno’s Matt Edwards in his Fiesta R5 chasing championships points and lack of visibility was the order of the opening four stages with crews complaining of thick clouds of dust hanging in the trees. Edwards/Clarke were third despite a scary moment in the dust on one of the flying finishes.

Better visibility on the second loop saw the pair hold on to third before the service crew changed the suspension from gravel to asphalt.

After an early scare on the second day when the Fiesta clipped a bank and an encounter with a bale chicane, Edwards/Clarke set four fastest stage times to finish second.

A number of drivers took part in the Nicky Grist Stages, part of the British Trial and Rally Drivers Association Championship.

Simon Rogers’ Mitsubishi Evo6 had been overheating ahead of the event but he came home 12th and second in class.

Father and son Dave and Toby Brick took their 1400cc Vauxhall Nova to class victory and 17th overall after rivals Chris Powell/Jim Lewis retired with gearbox problems.

Keaton Williams partnered Matlock’s Bob Vardy in a Fiesta and secured an impressive class win and 22nd place overall.

Martley’s Colin Griffiths enlisted Motor Sports Association Academy Co-driver Siobhan Pugh to read the notes in his BMW Compact but struggled with brake issues and finished 31st and third in class. Gary Smith retired in his MKI Escort.

Williams also competed in the Acropolis Rally alongside Orleton’s Roger Moran in the immaculate MkII Escort complete with a new engine. The pair produced a clean run to finish an excellent fourth overall and first in class.
