CLEOBURY Mortimer Volleyball Club finished the season with a double – winning both the men’s and women’s West Midlands League Shield.

Cleobury Ladies were first on court and ran out 3-0 winners against Wombourne Ladies even though their opponents cruised into an 8-2 lead early in the first set.

A determined Cleobury staged a dramatic fightback though and accurate passing from libero Zan Matuszewka helped setter Emma Gallagher utilise all her hitters to take the set 25-19.

Excellent serving and defence from Lynsey Potter and great hitting from Shannon Smith helped win the next set 25-15 and although Wombourne fought back in set three it was Cleobury who took the honours. Trailing 19-14 at one stage, excellent defence from Rebecca Gallagher and hitting from Rosie Millichamp spurred them on and a string of serves from captain Katherine Howells revitalised the side and they finally took the set 25-21.

To cap an impressive display, Potter was named Player of the Match.

It was another Cleobury-Wombourne head-to-head in the men’s final with the latter favourites for the silverware after winning the league.

But it was Cleobury who started the better and quickly built up a comfortable lead, setter Adam Bills quickly finding his range and soon had middles Matt Rogers and Josh Bate involved in the game. The set was won 25-19.

Wombourne took the second 25-22 but Cleobury hit back in style, taking the third 25-18.

The fourth set saw some excellent volleyball with some big hits from Cleobury's Jack Brookes having the crowd on their feet. Wombourne had a slender 18-17 advantage before a run of six points took Cleobury clear and they eventually took the set 25-19 to seal the match 3-1.

The double-double was completed when Brookes was announced MVP of the Final.
