KNIGHTON-on-Teme were edged out by Luctonians II with an over to spare in Saturday’s keenly-contested battle.

The hosts were put in to bat and made steady progress through Matthew James (19), Richard Grosvenor (22) and Jack Kitchen (17) before Tim Gasch weighed in with an unbeaten 23.

Support for the top five was lacking, though, and Knighton ended their 45 overs on 126 for nine after Jamie Simpson had taken five wickets for the visitors.

It was looking good for the home side when Jack Brain, who had been restricted to a frustrating score of six with the bat, made amends by taking four wickets for the loss of only nine runs, securing seven maidens from his 12 overs.

Opener Will Maund (15) had offered the only resistance until that man Simpson stepped up to fire off an unbeaten 51. Key to swinging the result was number 10 Liam Webdale’s 24 and with six balls left, Luctonians achieved 127 for nine.
