BOSS Darren Worthington is still backing Tenbury Town to win the Herefordshire League Division One title but admits the nerves are beginning to jangle.

Worthington’s men seemed set to storm their way to the crown but one point from three games has threatened to derail their bid with the final destination in sight.

Crucially, one of the defeats came at home to Kington Town Reserves, one of two teams that can still mathematically catch Tenbury, prior to Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Ledbury’s second string.

The table-toppers still have a 12-point cushion but have two home matches left to gain the four points that would put things beyond doubt.

The first is on Saturday against the other side that could still win the championship, Wellington Colts, (2.30) with local rivals Ludlow Colts the visitors to Brimfield & Little Hereford Sports Ground seven days later.

Any slips this weekend would be a tangible boost to a Kington side that has a six-match winning run behind them and the chance to fulfil two of their five remaining fixtures after Tenbury’s campaign ends.

“I wouldn’t say we have struggled, we have been confident enough in our play,” said Worthington. “If anything, there has been some over-confidence and maybe that has reflected in the results.

“The guys maybe feel like they have done enough to win the league but we haven’t crossed the line yet. It is a difficult time. We have struggled to put away our chances, although we have still been creating enough.

“There is a bit of a nervous edge but I have confidence in the players and think they will do it. We just need to settle down and keep working for each other like we have been all season.

“Three points should be enough because we have a better goal difference by about 20 so that should effectively be worth an extra point.”

Prolific Ledbury marksman Charlie Docherty might have made things worse but having beaten the offside trap, blazed over the crossbar when clean through in the first half of Saturday's blank.

“Ledbury probably had the best chance of the first half,” added Worthington. “We put balls across the box and right in front of the goal-line but had nobody there to finish them off.

“The second half was a bit of a stalemate until the last quarter when we started to dominate but they were resilient at the back and made life difficult for us.

Dec Bright and Dave Coupland were withdrawn from the Ledbury clash through injury but should recover quickly enough to take part against Wellington.

“It will be a tough encounter,” said Worthington. “It was the last time we played them but we hope to have close to a full-strength squad available and will prepare the boys as best we can to try to see us over the line.”
