TENBURY rugby player Callum Redding swapped on-field battles for success in the ring with victory in British Universities & Colleges Sport Boxing Championships.

The 21-year-old, who used to live in Rochford and is a third-year student in mechanical engineering at Northumbria University, was one of three gold medal winners at the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre in Stoke earlier this month.

Northumbria captain Redding overcame Southampton Solent’s Maksims Tkacneko in a 12-0 points whitewash to be crowned male 81-89kg champion, joining team-mates Hasan Ahmed (52-56kg) and Alexandros Farrell (64-69kg) in victory.

As well as representing Tenbury’s first XV in Midlands Five West (North) when available, Redding has also sparred at Tenbury Boxing Club without competing.
