TENBURY RFC captain Ed Gough believes his side can now kick on and achieve promotion from Midlands 5 West (North) following a fantastic 11-3 win at rivals Greyhound.

The Penlu side are now just one point behind the Hereford club following the victory and 10 points behind leaders Market Drayton, whom they face on January 28.

"We've got a big enough squad," said Gough.

"You never have your strongest side week in, week out, but the boys fit in nicely and we're definitely heading in the right direction.

"From where we were 12 months ago to where we are now is so different."

While admitting his side were 'miles off the pace' against Greyhound, Gough – who scored the winning try at the death – was delighted with the resilience his team-mates showed.

"We haven't won here before, so it's a big thing to come here and win," said Gough.

"If we're going to challenge for promotion, we had to come here and win and we did that.

"Normally when we come here, it's blowing a gale, but it was nice to see it calm because it suits us.

"There was no wind and the pitch was nice.

"We're a confident bunch and know on our day that we can win anywhere.

"But it was a nice to see us win without scoring loads of tries.

"We had to grind out the game and our defence was superb."

Greyhound forward Oli Paton also praised the way Tenbury played.

"They had a very good defence with fast line speed and we just couldn't get through them," he said.

"We tried to chip the ball over and it didn't work and all credit to them – they sucked us in and scored in the corner at the end."

Greyhound opened the scoring thanks to a penalty from Zack Thompson in the eighth minute after Richard Davies was upended.

But Tenbury grew into the game and drew level after 25 minutes with a penalty of their own, slotted over by Greg Powell.

Shortly afterwards, Greyhound thought they had scored a try through Chris Fisher, but the referee disallowed it.

That spurred Tenbury on and on numerous occasions they showed good footwork, with only their passing letting them down.

However, they did go ahead two minutes after the restart after Greyhound showed more ill-discipline.

Powell was again the man to kick over the penalty to make it 6-3.

Greyhound had a chance to score a try after being awarded a couple of scrums, but Tenbury defended stoutly.

Another penalty was awarded to the away side, but this time Powell missed it.

But a breakaway in the final minute saw Gough score in the corner to seal the win.
