BARBARA Griffiths bagged a memorable double after securing a pair of singles trophies at Brimfield and Little Hereford’s finals day.

Revered local bowler Griffiths comfortably retained her ladies’ singles title by showing unstoppable form in her 21-4 win against Sylvia Mallett.

And buoyed by that emphatic triumph, she tasted victory again in a prestigious open competition for all members, the Arthur Edwards singles, against her national pairs partner and reigning champion Karen Tandler.

Tandler got off to a bad start and, at 10-3 down, was unable to rein in Griffiths who showed magnificent form throughout. Unable to close the gap, Tandler eventually bowed out 21-9.

On a day dedicated to the singles flat green format, seven-time men’s champion Ashley Edwards was always going to be the man to beat and so it proved.

Alec Tandler made a contest of their final, taking three shots to close the gap to 18-14 before Edwards closed out the game 21-14 over the next two ends.

In the Millennium Plate, Alan Chesters took an early 6-0 lead against Henry Brewer but the tide quickly turned as Brewer found his line and length and went on to win the trophy 21-15.

A second finals day will be held at the Haynall Lane venue.

On the county scene, Herefordshire’s men head to the Supermarine Club in Swindon to take on Wiltshire on Thursday (2pm).

The ladies host Mid Wales at Bulmers on Wednesday before holding a county celebration match on Thursday, September 8.
