PROMISING teenager Jack Severn from Cleobury Mortimer GC has made it through to the UK & Ireland Grand Final of the American Golf Junior Championship.

The Worcestershire under 16s captain and also a starter for the under 18s, qualified at Gaudet Luce Golf Club.

The 15-year-old progressed to take his place at Gainsborough GC, home of golf giant Ping, to battle it out for the title of the best Junior golfer in the UK & Ireland.

Jack won qualification with second place in the Best Gross Score category after a fantastic round of two over par off a handicap of three. Jack equalled the score of the eventual winner, being narrowly edged out on back-nine countback.

The Shropshire youngster will now join qualifiers from events all over the UK & Ireland in an effort to take the American Golf title in front of Sky Sports’ cameras.

Entry to all of the American Golf Championships, including the American Golf 9 Hole, Junior, Ladies and Senior Championships, is completely free and is part of the nationwide retailer’s drive to promote the game of golf and get more people out playing golf more often.

They say you can’t start them too young and another Jack, Jack Dirkin, is living proof of that.

The seven-year-old who plays at Church Stretton is eyeing the top after already winning the UK Boys Under 6s last year.

In fact he’s already made it on to the telly after an appearance of GMTV last week meeting presenters Kate Galloway and Susanna Reid.

The youngster who could follow in the footsteps of other great lefties like Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir is heading off to the United States where last year he finished 32nd at Pinehurst GC in the World U6 championship.

He also finished ninth in the European U7s at North Berwick in June and was recognised at the Energize Awards in Shropshire where he won the Newcomer of the Year award in 2015.
