LUDLOW’S Scott Moran is still on course for a sixth British Hill Climb title after a record-breaking weekend in the Channel Islands.

The 40-year-old is well on his way to equalling Tony Marsh’s record of six wins with 12 rounds of the championship to go.

However, this weekend he will sit it out due to family commitments as closest rival Trevor Willis tries to close the gap at Wiscombe Park, although each driver drops there worst six results of the season.

Moran led the field throughout at Le Val des Terres on Guernsey having done well in event 10 on Jersey, traditionally not a venue where he has shone.

On the Jersey hill records fell for all three of the main contenders – Moran, Willis and Wallace Menzies with Willis knocking almost a second off the previous best.

But it is Moran who leads the championship on 209 points with Willis on 188 and Menzies well back on 135 and all but mathematically out of contention.

With 13 wins under his belt already this season Moran said: “It isn’t getting any easier. The car {Gould V} is now 11 years old but still very competitive.

“I’ve won 13 rounds this year and normally you need 13 or 14 if consistent in other races to win the championship so hopefully I’m ahead of schedule.”

Moran saw Alex Summers, with whom he shared the V8 last season, take the crown in 2015 but now he has sole use for the first time having previously shared it with his dad, Roger, also a British champion.

He said: “It’s the first year without a second driver but the car has won six championships including Alex’s last year. I’m quietly confident but taking each weekend as it comes.

“The next three or four meetings are crucial. The car works well everywhere - it’s down to me – the car is good enough.”

The championship concludes at Loton Park in Shrewsbury on September 25.
