MOTHER and son duo Viv and George Cooper shone in the sun as they won the Flowfit Ludlow and District Bowls League Doubles Competition on a scorching day at Cleobury Mortimer Bowling Club.

A couple of late withdrawals meant that 20 teams took part in the competition but the quality of some of the pairings was of the highest order.

A new name was guaranteed to be on the trophy and it was a family affair as the father-and-son pairing of Len and Nick Lewis took on the mother-and-son team of Viv and George.

The Coopers had the better of the early exchanges and each end either consisted of a good lead by George or a great save by Viv. They settled the best early on and soon found themselves 11-3 up by playing from corner to corner on the very quick surface.

The Lewises won the block back though and gave themselves a chance by getting it back to 14-10 but the Coopers again kept there cool and took a 19-11 lead. Nick and Len looked to have got their rhythm back though as it was 19-16 two ends later, however, Viv bowled two great shots to win the game 21-16 and to cause a huge upset in the final.

The win capped a great week for Viv who reached the quarter-finals in the Meole Brace Ladies' Open the week before while George is a current reserve for the County Juniors.

There were some shocks along the way with Joe and Lauren Burnside beating Simon Lane and Dave Wilding and the fancied team of Carl Bowen and Ben Allen only scoring three against homesters Phil Pack and Michael Hutchinson.

The two semi-finals provided close and entertaining games as Burway's Len and Nick Lewis took on the Burway/Craven Arms pairing of Kiah Roberts and Jesse James, with a 21-17 win for the Lewis pair who held their nerve after a spirited fightback from 14-5 and 20-7 down

Semi number two was equally good and saw the eventual winners beat the Burway/Bromfield double of Jolyon Partridge and Adam Dovey21-6.
