MARTIN DOWNES won the captain’s prize for the best men’s nett score at Ludlow Golf Club’s captain's day on Saturday.

His score of 37pts was equalled by Adam Bridges but Downes’ back nine score of 20pts secured top spot.

Andy Ferriday won the vice-captain’s prize for his best gross score of 34pts, finishing one shot ahead of playing partner George Watton.

The best ladies' score was returned by Ruth Ball. Her score of 31pts was three clear of runner-up Val Jackman. Ray Mantle scored 34pts to win the seniors’ prize with Geoff Rose and Stuart Roberts just one shot behind.

The best junior, winning the Jack Price Cup, was Nathan Herdsfield with 34pts, two points ahead of Jonathan Price.

Club captain John Harris said: ‘’I hope everybody had a fantastic day.

“Meeting all the players at the halfway house was great fun, we served over 130 bacon baps, 40 pints of Ludlow Gold and numerous bottles of wine

“Also one pint of Guinness to Martin Downes who claimed this was the key ingredient in putting together a winning score of 37 points. I think I am going to try this myself for the next comp!

“I would like to thank especially my vice-captain Dave Sanders who not only provided the best gross prize but also provided his time and the BBQ equipment.

“The winning scores proved that the course had provided a challenge and we are now seeing the results of all the hard work by the greens staff.

“I would like to thank all who helped in managing the event which ended with a super quality dinner.

“The only problem I have now is making sure that the next nine months are as enjoyable as the previous three.”
