CLEOBURY Mortimer reflected on one of their most successful seasons to date after the West Midlands Volleyball Association AGM was held last week.

The club continued their progress in both junior and adult sections through the 2015/16 season.

The Ladies 2nd team compete in the West Midlands Division Two and finished off their season in a respectable sixth position with local rivals and new club to the volleyball scene Hereford taking the title and promotion.

Cleobury Ladies 1st had one of their most successful seasons ever, taking the West Midlands Ladies Championship title with a four-point cushion at the top.

League manager, Aneel Khanna, said: “Tamworth, who came second, must be kicking themselves as they managed to lose their last two fixtures.”

Cleobury men finished a respectable third just six points from Division Two winners Birmingham Mets.

The junior teams this season were also acknowledged in various cup competitions, U15 Girls being runners up and U13s Girls cup winners.

As well as picking up the Ladies League Cup this season, ladies wing hitter Lyndsey Potter also received the Most Valuable Player award for the most votes from opposing teams.

Jack Brookes the men’s wing hitter was also handed the MVP award. Jack, who is only 17 years old and currently sitting his A-levels, plays volleyball for Cleobury and National League team the West Country. As well as playing and training Jack also helps coaching junior teams within the region.

His dedication to volleyball was recognised within the West Midlands Association and he was awarded the Young Volunteers Award of the Year.

As the season draws to a close the club have organised a charity fun volleyball day which is being held on Saturday (July 2) at Lacon Childe School, Cleobury Mortimer playing fields. All welcome, no skills required.

The club’s AGM is also being held on Wednesday, July 6 at Cleobury Mortimer Sports and Social Club, 8pm.
