NIGEL Williams won the first of the year’s trophies up for grabs at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club when he took the honours in the Hendry Three Club.

The competition, one of the club’s oldest, allows just three clubs to be used with one of them being a putter.

Williams, a former winner, played some fantastic golf on his way to a very impressive 37 points to lift the silverware ahead of Gary Mann and Jamie Fearnley who continued his fine recent form to take third place.

Director of golf Dave Pain said: ‘It was great to see a nice mix of players in the top three. Nigel has won this competition before and clearly knows how to score with just three clubs. It was thoroughly deserved.”

A trophy was also presented at Ludlow Golf Club where Lesley Buchan secured the Angora Bowl for the lady who has reduced her handicap the most over the past 12 months.

The Professional’s Team won the final match of the Captain v Professional Series 5 ½ - 3 ½ to win the series by just a single point.

Mike Corfield got off to a fast start in the first match when he holed his second shot into the 1st for an eagle and followed this up with gross and nett birdies on the next two holes. Captain John Harris then came to the fore despite suffering from a bad back.

Thanks in no small part to Malcolm Weaver’s excellent putting, he and professional Russell Price played some excellent golf in this low scoring match that finished all square. The biggest winners on the day were Simon Jones and Alan Jones who won their match by 7 & 6.

Darren Humphries dropped shots on his last two holes but still finished top of Division One of the Sitwell Qualifier. Division Two produced a tie at the top between Steve Cox and Andrew Macwhirter with the former winning with a better back nine. Tony Watton shot an excellent 67 nett to win Division Three.
