NEWCASTLE booked their place in the semi-finals of the Pip Samuel Mid Wales South League Cup after seeing off Hay St Mary's Reserves 2-1.

Both sides had chances to open the scoring before the break with Carl Price causing problems for the Hay defence while the visitors missed a penalty, the ball bouncing off the upright.

Two goals in the opening ten minutes of the second half swung the game in Newcastle’s favour, Matt Jones heading in the first with Craig Morris doubling the advantage after latching onto an excellent through ball from Sam Windsor.

Hay pulled a goal back midway through the second half.

Newcastle travel to title-chasing Brecon Town on Saturday.

In the Sportsjam Premier League, there was a shock 2-1 defeat for Church Stretton at basement club Shifnal United 97, Sean Gough on target for the visitors.

Clee Hill United stayed second in Division One thanks to a 2-0 win at home to Oakengates Rangers, Craig Shorter with both of the goals.

And that means they maintained their two-point cushion over Gobowen Celtic who were 5-1 winners at home to Brown Clee.

This weekend sees Church Stretton head to league leaders FC Oswestry Town but Clee Hill and Brown Clee are without a game.

In Division One of the Herefordshire League, Orleton Colts Reserves lost 2-0 at home to Bromyard.

They will hope to bounce back this weekend at home to bottom club Ewyas Harold Reserves while Tenbury Town head to Wellington Colts. The pick of Saturday’s games will see Woofferton and Sinkums come face-to-face at Haynall Lane. In the Premier Division, Orleton Colts head to Pegasus Juniors while Tenbury United host Ewyas Harold.

Norbury celebrated back-to-back wins in the Shrewsbury and District Sunday League, beating The Peacock 1-0 having seen off Condover Foxes 5-0 the previous week.

On Sunday they host neighbours Minsterley Rangers.
