A LAST-gasp strike from Si Bradley handed Woofferton the local bragging rights as they saw off ground-sharing neighbours Tenbury Town 3-2 in Division One of the Herefordshire League.

And if they stretch their unbeaten league run to five games at home to Wellington Colts on Saturday, the Blues could go top of the table.

Woofferton had the better of a first half played in tricky conditions and had opened up a two-goal lead by the break.

With the pitch cutting up right from the start, flowing football was rarely on display but the impressive Jack Pound did put a through ball into the path of Marian Jusko whose low strike beat Town keeper Steve Sumner.

After creating the opener, Pound duly doubled the lead with his sixth goal in as many games, chipping the ball over Sumner and finding the net via the far post.

Tenbury came back strongly in the second half and soon pulled one back when the experienced Stuart Skidmore got on the end of a corner to loop a header over helpless Blues keeper Wayne Roberts.

The goal gave Town hope and they continued to press Woofferton in search of an equaliser. And they were rewarded when Alex Bright was fouled by Dan Gower in the area and leading scorer Mark Boucker put the resulting penalty away.

It looked like the ground-sharers would also be sharing the points but, with just minutes to go, Bradley pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the Tenbury area and drilled his shot past Sumner.

Woofferton spokesman Dave Thomas said it was always good to take the spoils in a derby game, particularly against a side who had been something of a bogey side over the seasons.

“It was a real battle to secure the points as Tenbury really came at us in the second half,” he said. “It’s pleasing though because we hadn’t beaten them for a while.

“We missed a lot of chances but a win is a win and we have to keep this great run going to keep pressure on the other sides at the top.”

Victory at home to Wellington Colts on Saturday (ko 2pm) would avenge a 2-1 Jock Handley Cup defeat last month and take the Blues top of Division One with title rivals Holme Lacy out of action.

Tenbury Town head to Kingstone Harriers (ko 2pm) looking to put an end to a four-match losing run stretching back to November.
