TENBURY RFC overcame atrocious conditions to bag a 25-7 bonus point victory over Chaddesley Corbett in Midlands 5 West (North).

And player-coach Andy Black is hoping his side can continue their good form and inflict a first defeat of the season on league leaders Essington this weekend.

Tenbury made the perfect start when winger Ben Spires showed some pace to power his way over for the opening score in the corner.

Boosted by that early score, the home side added an excellent try through back row Greg Powell who dotted down under the posts to give Ed Gough a simple conversion for a 12-0 advantage.

Good work from the forwards ensured they dominated the scrums and line-outs and some excellent running was rewarded when Jacob Thomas darted over in the corner for his side’s third try of the half to secure a 17-0 interval lead.

Chaddesley did come more into the game at the start of the second period and reduced the arrears with a converted try.

But that was as good as it got for them and a Gough penalty in front of posts snubbed out any thoughts of a fightback.

Tenbury bagged the bonus when an excellent move was finished off by Claude Celton as the home side avenged a 21-7 defeat at Chaddesley just two months previously.

An altercation in the final few minutes saw both sides finish the game with 14 men, the referee opting to show a red card apiece when a sin-binning seemed more appropriate.

Black said the win was down to time spent in the gym over the last few weeks and to a great focus within the squad.

“When we lost at Chaddesley a few weeks ago we knew that we hadn’t turned up for the game,” he said.

“The players have worked hard in the gym and we convinced ourselves that we would win this time. We had a game plan to run the ball whenever we could and that’s what we did in spite of the conditions.”

Saturday’s hosts Essington have won all ten of their league games this season but Black says the players remain focused.

He added: “It will be a tall order against Essington but we only lost to them 8-0 at ours so why can’t we cause an upset? There’s a good feeling inside the squad at the moment.”
