IT’S a massive weekend of action for Herefordshire League neighbours Tenbury United and Tenbury Town.

United tackle their biggest game of the season so far, with the runaway Premier Division leaders visiting second-placed Wellington Reserves, who look to be their only serious challengers for the prized county crown.

And Town, holding their own in their first season in Division One, host Ledbury Town Reserves in a mouthwatering HFA Junior Cup tie at Brimfield and Little Hereford Sports Club.

United have 28 points from 11 matches while unbeaten Wellington boast 20 from eight. Earlier in the season the two teams drew 1-1 and United co-boss Nick Stocker, whose side also face Wellington at home in the HFA Charity Bowl the following week, said: “We felt a little bit unlucky not to take all three points in the first meeting. For the majority of the game we were the better side but couldn’t find a second goal. In the end Wellington finished strongly, got the equaliser and could have won so a draw was probably a fair result.”

He added: “I can’t see anyone challenging for the title apart from the two of us – everyone else is just too far behind. Wellington were the best side we played last season and that hasn’t changed this time.

“It was actually seeing how Wellington play that gave me the idea to play Mike Foster and Dale Withers up front, even though both are midfielders. They have scored 20 goals between them and are a major reason why we are doing so well.”

Meanwhile Town manager Bob Sumner has high hopes that his newly-promoted side can reach the final of the HFA Junior Cup for the third successive season.

He said: “Last season’s success gave me the belief we could hold our own in Division One as we had beaten many higher league teams in our cup runs. The first goal was to get to 15 points which I believe will be enough to keep us in the division and we already have 12.

“I couldn’t ask for a better bunch of players. They have quality and are great to work with.

“I know what they are capable of and we all want to win the Junior Cup, having lost in the last two finals. But it’s down to what happens on the day.”
