TENBURY United are in early-season dreamland after winning a stunning seven-goal thriller at reigning Herefordshire League champions Ewyas Harold last Saturday.

A famous 4-3 victory opened up a five-point lead at the head of the Premier Division table - and was a statement of intent that the Palmer’s Meadow outfit are a force to be reckoned with this season.

United raced into a 3-0 lead, then saw Ewyas Harold level matters, only for supersub Dan Gittens to clinch it with a brilliant last-ditch winner.

Co-boss Nick Stocker admitted: “The winner from Dan Gittens was magnificent, and one of the best individual goals I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve been involved with United for 15 years or more and I can’t remember a game like this where we have come out winners.

“Perhaps this is the start of a new Tenbury United, one that never gives up and always believes they can win games.”

United were 1-0 up within 18 seconds when Dale Withers delivered a great cross that allowed Ian Patterson to tap home, and ten minutes later Patterson rounded the keeper to make it 2-0.

Tenbury then lost Mike Foster with a hamstring injury, but substitute Gittens, who was coming back from injury, made an instant impact to send United three goals clear with a powerful strike after good work from Edd Anton and Macauly Stone.

Ewyas Harold changed their formation to come out fighting in the second half. With ten minutes left it was 3-3, United were on their knees and there looked to be only one winner.

But keeper George Pearson proved in top form and in the last attack of the game Gittens found himself in space wide on the right. He ghosted in and out of two defenders to smash an unstoppable shot high into the net.

United travel to Lads Club Reserves this weekend.
