LUDLOW College hammer thrower Katie Lambert believes she is starting to show her true potential after throwing a championship record on the way to gold at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games.

Lambert, from the Kidderminster and Stourport club, joined 1,600 other competitors in Manchester for the UK’s largest multi-sport event for elite level school-age athletes.

The 16-year-old threw 63.08 metres with the 3k hammer to take gold, beating England South East’s Katie Head into second place.

She is aiming to go up to a senior weight next season and admitted she wants to stand out from the rest after her incredible performance in Manchester.

“It’s amazing to throw a record and a personal best,” she said. “I’m not surprised because I knew I could do it, I was just waiting for it to happen in competition.

“It is a relief to get there really. It’s annoying though because it’s a Worlds qualifying distance and I’m a month too late. Next season I go up to the senior weight.”

The Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games, supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, featured 12 different sports across four days. Visit www.2015schoolgames.com for more information.
