LOWLY Cound subjected Ludlow to a disappointing six-wicket defeat as son defeated father in a Shropshire League generation game.

Simon Miles, Ludlow’s 4th XI captain, was pitted against son Luke, a former Ludlow player, in the Premier Division clash after a late call-up into the first team.

And while dad Simon, batting at number nine, hit a determined 25 to help Ludlow recover from 75-5 to 144 all out off 48.1 overs, Luke won the family feud with an unbeaten 65 off just 48 balls seeing Cound home on 147-4.

He made the most of Cound’s compact surrounds to cream five fours and six sixes to combat a three-wicket burst from Will Sparrow (3-36).

Tom Gloster also hit 28 for Ludlow, with seven of their batsmen dismissed by catches behind the wicket from Calum Bennett-Morris.

Matthew Hawes (56 not out) and Will?Wood (55) both posted half-centuries in Ludlow 2nd’s draw against Cound 2nd - Ludlow’s 275-7 bettering Cound’s 254-7 - while Ludlow 3rd kept their nerve to also claim a winning draw in a tense Division Three finish against Harpers.

Kevin Boulton (94) and Scott Kemsley (71) had given Ludlow a solid foundation with an opening partnership of 129, and number three batsman Craig Massey also hit 28, but they then subsibed and were dismissed for 258 in the 40th over.

Opener Amrut Raut led the chase for Harpers and at the death they needed 13 off the final over from Joe Williams, who was harshly adjudged to have opened with two wides. Then came two run outs, the last off the final ball as Harpers fell short on 256-6.

The big-hitting Harry Fiaz is taking Division Five by storm after another spellbinding performance of Bothamesque proportions for Corvedale 2nd against Knockin and Kinnerley 4th.

FIaz, who had made 109 and taken 5-16 on his debut the previous week, followed it up with 154 and another five-wicket haul as Corvedale 2nd claimed a winning draw.

Fiaz, who is set to turn professional as a boxer later this year, hammered 13 fours and 13 sixes in another sensational innings lasting just 78 balls as Corvedale reached 284 all out, fortysomething number 11 batsman Matt Diamond taking some inspiration from Fiaz’s fireworks by weighing in with a career-best 40 off 28 balls.

Fiaz then help restrict Knockin and Kinnerley to 135-7 off their 40 overs, taking 5-31 off 14 overs.

Corvedale 2nd skipper Ian Alderson said: “Harry is absolutely magnificent and a total natural. He sees it and hits it so well and all around the ground too.

"I batted with him for a while and we put on 40 or so, of which I scored four!

“He only bowls off three or four yards but being a boxer, he generates so much pace from his shoulders and arms.

"He fields well too and it’s great to have him in the side.”

Alderson added: “It was good to see Harry Diamond score 40 too. He’s been with us around ten years and his previous highest score was 15.”

Corvedale 1st went down by seven wickets against Calverhall in Division Three, opener Adam Williams and Dave Bradley both scoring 44 towards their 233 all out while Church Stretton were also beaten in Division Two.

Opener Rob Whittall hit 82 for Stretton against Wellington 3rd, but their total of 156 always looked modest, though skipper Peter Lee’s 4-42 did mean their opponents lost seven wickets in knocking off the runs.

But Bishop’s Castle were convincing winners against Willey after dismissing their visitors for just 77 in the 32nd over. Simon Palmer (6-32) and Richard Powell (4-19) teamed up to share all ten wickets and opener Richard Plant’s 37 then all but saw Castle home.
