TELFORD boxer Harry Fiaz made a knockout debut for Corvedale 2nd last weekend – delivering a spectacular unbeaten century and then snapping up five wickets to help floor Lilleshall 3rd by 94 runs.

Fiaz, a 22-year-old fighter who is expected to turn professional as a super middleweight later this year, smashed a sensational 109 not out off only 42 balls in his first appearance for the club as Corvedale 2nd reached 205-5 off 28 overs. He bludgeoned twelve sixes and five fours and kept his momentum – despite two rain stoppages.

The new boy then took over with the ball, bowling rapidly for a terrific analysis of 12-4-16-5 as Lilleshall 3rd were removed for 111.

Fiaz, son of former Telford Muslims player Mo Fiaz, said: “Mike Herbert from Corvedale came to the same gym as me and he said they sometimes struggled to get a full team and would I like a game.

“I used to be with Wellington, but I haven’t played for a few years and I thought I would give it a go. I quickly got into the swing of things, scoring 30 off nine balls, and I really enjoyed it. I am hoping to play for Corvedale for the rest of the season.”

Corvedale 1st also had cause for celebration after a four-wicket win over Chelmarsh in Division Three – and they too owed much to one player. Nathan Portlock was their hero, claiming 3-4 off just 11 balls in helping dismiss Chelmarsh for 141, and then striking 58 not out in the 145-6 reply. Skipper Ross Mantle took 2-25 and made 24. Church Stretton defeated Condover by two wickets in Division Two, James Evans hitting 49 of their 186-8 in response to Condover’s 185-5, while Bishop’s Castle made light work of seeing off Much Wenlock.

Off-spinner Richard Langford’s 5-12 did most to demolish Much Wenlock for 83 and Richard Plant’s unbeaten 57 hurried Castle to victory on 86-1.

Jack Purkis hit a seasonal-best 80 for Bishop’s Castle 2nd as they secured a winning draw against Oswestry 4th. Castle were bowled out for 191, but tight bowling, notably from Chris Irving (10-0-23-3) kept Wenlock down to 133-6 off their 40 overs.
