A MATT Malley goal proved decisive as Newcastle completed a double over Hay St Mary Reserves, edging to a tight 1-0 win in the Watson Financial Mid-Wales League (South).

Newcastle had hit top form to beat Hay 5-2 in the corresponding fixture, but defences dominated on this occasion and a repeat showing never looked on the cards.

The only goal of the game arrived on 25 minutes when Craig Morris was first to a cross into the box and the ball fell for Malley.

Despite being under pressure he managed to get his shot away into the corner past several Hay defenders on the line.

The second half proved just as competitive, and though Newcastle keeper Gary Davies was generally well protected by his rearguard, he did have to make a smart stop to tip over a dangerous cross-shot.

Newcastle came close to adding a second goal, though Hay too had their moments and pushed forward with great purpose at times, though their efforts for an equaliser ended in vain.

Newcastle have no fixture this weekend, but travel to Presteigne Reserves next Wednesday, April 15 (7.30pm).

The match is a rehearsal for the forthcoming Alf Sparey Cup semi-final between the two teams.
