NEWCASTLE have now picked up only four points from a possible 18 following defeat against second placed Rhayader Town Reserves in Mid-Wales League (South).

The home side were forced to defend for much of the first half against their higher placed opposition, but they refused to buckle as they fought for every ball.

Goalkeeper Gary Davies had to produce a number of fine saves when called upon to ensure the teams went into the break level.

Newcastle enjoyed more possession in the second half and were handed an excellent chance to take the lead when top scorer Craig Morris broke through on goal.

However, he was denied a goal by the visiting keeper.

That miss would prove to be costly because moments later, Rhayader took the lead thanks to a headed effort with just 15 minutes remaining.

Newcastle pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were caught on the counter attack, conceding a second goal in the last minute of the game after a slip from Davies.

This Saturday, Newcastle, who drop a place to tenth in the league table, travel to third-from-bottom Builth Wells Reserves with a 2.30pm kick-off.
