JOHN Westley was celebrating after coming top in Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club's (CMGC) busiest winter competition this season.

More than 50 players took part in the double roll-up, with the best overall score winning.

Conditions on the Saturday were slightly tougher with Dave Smith, Rich Smith, Gordon Moriaty and Steve Scrace all scoring 38 points.

With a superior back count, Scrace lead the way going into the following day.

Division Two winter order of merit leader Colin Hopewell once again continued his fine form with 38 to finish fifth and pick up precious points.

New member Eduardo shot 39 points which looked like being enough, but both Wayne Poulton and Dave Slater had a superior back count to finish third and second respectively.

The weekend belonged to Westley though, who shot a very impressive 40 points.

Westley even had a slight wobble with two no score holes on the back nine.

However his partner Paul Liggins helped him keep it together.

"I have been playing some good golf this year and getting an individual win is a great feeling," said Westley.

"I held some good putts at the right time to keep the round together’."

Cleobury coach Sam Pain added: "John has been very steady all year with some great team wins.

"He is a very good player off his handicap and I am sure it will be the first of many.

"I am also delighted for Dave Slater who has been having lessons with me over the winter.

"We have been working really hard on his driving accuracy, finding fairways is crucial this time of year and it certainly paid off ."
