PHIL Baker, Daniel Berwick, Richard Kimberlin and Ian Baker came top in the latest Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club better ball competition,

The foursome were the first team out and had the toughest of the sub-zero temperatures.

But they played some great golf to ensure they posted 87 points.

That gave them the win, which was their first since joining the club two years ago.

Second place went to club vice-captain Dave Moore and his team of Gary Hingley, Jamie Fearnley and Bob Barlow.

Golf events organiser Matt Juliard said: "It is great to see some fresh faces winning at Cleobury.

"They have a great mix of handicaps which suited the format with each player evenly contributing under Ian's captaincy."

Final standings: 1 Phil Baker, Richard Kimberlin, Daniel Berwick, Ian Baker 87pts, 2 Gary Hingley, Dave Moore, Jamie Fearnley, Bob Barlow 86; Nearest the pin 6th badgers - Craig Shorter, Nearest the pin 8th Foxes - Andy Thomas.

Meanwhile, Ludlow Golf Club are setting the gears in motion for an 18-hole scratch strokeplay competition for lady golfers.

Being held on Saturday, April 4, the event will feature players with a handicap of at least 15, with gross and nett prizes on offer.

The winner will also have their name on the Ludlow Golf Club's Ladies Scratch Bowl which was won last year by Helen White.

The competition will be held in the middle part of the men's 36-hole scratch tournament.

Ludlow Golf Club spokesman Kim Simm said the scratch open was inaugurated last year as part of the club's 125th anniversary.

"Low handicap lady golfers have very little opportunity to compete against one another in scratch strokeplay," said Simm.

"Everyone who played really enjoyed themselves as there was so little competitive golf being played around the country.

"Ludlow Golf Club is very lucky to have a course laid on sand and gravel which provides top quality playing surfaces all year round.

"The course is prepared especially early at the start of each golfing season to give top quality fast greens to offer the best playing conditions for our annual Men’s Scratch Open and for the county’s select event the Clee Salver, both held at the beginning of April."
