TENBURY captain Will Gough shouldered some of the responsibility for his side’s narrow 10-9 defeat against fellow strugglers Greyhound, after failing to convert three penalty kicks in the second half.

The Palmers Meadow side had slumped to a large defeat the previous weekend, but were in good spirits as they took on Greyhound in a bottom-of-the-table clash in Midlands 4 West (North).

It was a closely fought encounter that left Gough disappointed with the result but not the performance.

“I thought we should have won” said the Tenbury captain.

"Everyone put in a shift, we competed all over the park, we had a lot of the ball but we failed to make the most of it.”

It was a game that saw small errors prove costly according to Gough.

"We conceded a soft try at the start of the game and despite doing well in various phases of the game, we had a few knock-ons that stopped us building up any momentum.”

Despite scoring all of his sides points, Gough was left frustrated with his own personal performance that saw him fail to convert three second half penalty kicks.

The defeat means Tenbury are now five points adrift of Greyhound and Market Drayton at the foot of the table.

“It was frustrating, we had played well enough but we just didn’t take our chances," conceded Gough.

“The players were down in the dressing room after the game, but it was one of those games.

"Whatever we tried, and for all the effort we put in, there was someone looking down on us saying it just wasn’t going to be our day.”

But Tenbury do have another perfect opportunity to turn things around,

After a free weekend on Saturday, they travel to Market Drayton on January 31 in another vitally important game.

“We’ve got to keep putting the effort in," said Gough.

"We’ve got to believe in ourselves and keep working hard on the training ground.

"There’s a lot of rugby left to play and we can’t afford to dwell on past results.

"We’ve still got Yardley to come to us and we need to look at each game as a chance to pick up points.”

Tenbury are hoping a sizeable crowd will travel to Market Drayton to support the team.

"We’re putting a coach on for our supporters so hopefully they will be able to cheer us on to a much-needed win," said Gough.
