JAMES Robertson was Woofferton’s hero as his saves ensured Woofferton won the bragging rights against rivals Brimfield in Hereford Times Herefordshire League Division One.

The goalkeeper pulled off a number of terrific stops to enable the Blues to go eight matches unbeaten.

“It was pleasing to see the lads battle so hard for the win, especially at the end as Brimfield were putting us under constant pressure,” said Woofferton player/secretary Dave ‘Magnum’ Thomas.

“James Robertson was immense in goal and deservedly got our man of the match.

“He kept us in the game with good positioning and a couple of great saves.

“Brimfield are a good team and they break really well, but we defended the box well and they were mainly limited to long range efforts on goal.”

With the main pitch waterlogged, the match was played on the more compact second pitch.

The game kicked off in typical derby fashion, with tackles flying in and referee Haydn Kirby having to warn players of their behaviour.

Woofferton opened the scoring through a Dan Gower free-kick, which was enough to take into the half-time break.

Brimfield came out stronger in the second half and equalised when James Byatt lobbed Robertson from 20 yards.

Woofferton regained the lead on the hour mark when Gower crossed for Danny Hicks to blast home, but Brimfield came back again. This time it was Luke Pugh who netted after his cross-cum-shot flew over Robertson’s head. But it wasWoofferton who had the last word when Si Bradley crossed to Gower, who flicked the ball into the patch of Jack Pound to fire home from close range.

Brimfield boss Duncan Morris meanwhile was disappointed his team did not come away with at least a point.

“It was a great performance from my men,” said Morris.

“The game could have gone either way and I felt the better side lost .”

Both teams are off for the festive break.

Brimfield are back in action on January 3 against Wellington Colts, while Woofferton play the following week against Ewyas Harold Reserves.

Orleton Colts manager Kristian Morgan will be hoping for a win against Tenbury United this Saturday after failing to beat bottom club Leominster.

Kyle Whitticase missed a last-minute penalty for Colts, which if converted, would have resulted in their first win since November 15.

“We should have won the game because we had loads of chances,” said Morgan.

“Their keeper pulled off some good saves then Kyle hit a post from the penalty spot right at the end."

Martin Jones put Orleton ahead before Sam Thomas levelled for Leominster.

Orleton Colts Reserves scored four goals but still went down 6-4 to Ledbury Town Reserves in the quarter-finals of the HFA Burghill Cup.
