A FATHER and son driving team from Ludlow carded a good finish during a rally in mid-Wales.

Co-driver Keaton Williams and his dad Chris took part in the Powys Lanes Rally in Chris’s Mitsubishi Colt.

Seeded at car 51, the event started badly for the pair when they were stuck behind another competitor who had broken down, blocking the road.

Along with others, however, they managed to push the vehicle out of the way and carried on.

But things didn’t improve for them when their engine cut out and the crew struggled to find the cause of the breakdown.

Eventually, the motor started again and the Williams duo continued to the finish line, ending 30th overall and 10th in class.

A week later, Keaton was out on the Showground Stages Rally, based at Builth Wells, with Leominster driver Malcolm Perrott in an MKII Ford Escort.

Having finished last year’s event in tenth place they were keen to improve on that.

However, Perrott was slightly rusty having not driven the car since last year.

But a cautious approach in difficult conditions paid off as other crews encountered problems, and after the first loop of stages they were ninth overall.

Then, with the stages drying out, speeds began to increase, bringing with it some problems. These came to a head when the crew hit a rock causing a puncture before carrying on and encountering a gearbox issue.

With two stages to go, the Escort was in sixth place, just three seconds off fifth and only two seconds in front of seventh.

To make matters even more interesting, the stages were run in darkness. This is not usually a problem for a rally car with spotlights but unfortunately, Williams and Perrott's lights had failed meaning they were forced to drive on headlights alone.

The inevitable time loss saw them slip to seventh overall and second in class, but it meant they had beaten last year’s result.
