CLEOBURY Mortimer Golf Club's Tom Pain was celebrating after scooping an amateur prize.

Pain shot 38 points at the Shropshire Alliance at Hawkstone Park Golf Club to take home the title following a countback.

He completed the back nine in two under gross for 22 points.

"It was great out there with Ian Dorrell, Andy Johnson and Simon Johnson," said Pain.

"Ian knows my game well so was a great help when helping me plot my way round the course.

"The key for me at the moment is certainly to play from the tee.

"After struggling for a while, Sam Pain got me on the launch monitor on the practice area and made a few tweaks, including lofting up.

"I'm hitting a lot more fairways with my G30, which makes things slightly easier than playing from out of the trees."

Cleobury fielded three teams in the 18-team event, but the C team narrowly missed out on the team prizes, but picked up some important Order of Merit points.

Dean Carpenter finished in third place in the amateur standings after shooting 37 points.

The next Alliance is at Cleobury next Thursday.

Meanwhile, Pinner, Jim Went, Andy Young and Ian Dorrell cruised to victory at Cleobury's 'yellow ball' event.

Played over 18 holes, the team of four contest features a yellow ball that is rotated around each hole and counts for double points.

But if it is lost, it is lost for the whole round, adding extra pressure when it is in your hands.

The best two scores per hole counts towards the final total, with Pinner, Went, Young and Dorrell finishing on 134 points.

Early starters Brian Linington Payne, Dave Rowse and Dave Walker put in a stunning performance considering they were a player down and recorded 124 points.

But they could do nothing to stop Pinner, Went, Young and Dorrell claiming the win.

"They are a very strong team with a mix of handicaps," said Cleobury director of golf Dave Pain.

"As soon as I saw their names on the team-sheet, I knew they would be the ones to beat."
