ANY sporting team would be delighted at winning the league they are playing in.

So imagine how the ladies team at Burway Bowls Club is feeling after winning the Flowfit Ludlow & District Bowls League - for the 23rd consecutive year.

The incredible success now means the last time Burway didn't have its hands on the league trophy was in 1991, when John Major was Prime Minister and the UK music scene was dominated by Bryan Adams and Chesney Hawkes.

The 13-strong Burway squad secured their latest triumph with a near 90 per cent win percentage over the course of the season.

Three of the squad members - Mary Jones, Jan Roberts and Gayle Tipton - have been there since the start of the incredible run.

"It's the 23rd time in a row we've won the league now," said Jones.

"Obviously we're really pleased.

"We're all regular bowlers. The sport is perhaps not as popular for women as it used to be but we still keep going and enjoy it.

"We've got two girls who are still at school. They played for us for the first time this year and are really good.

"The men's team here is also very good. It must be rubbing off on us."

Burway were captained by Barbara Mantle and won the league from nearest challengers Craven Arms, who ran them close for most of the campaign.

Their success was secured in style with successive victories against Bylet, Stokesay, Corve, Ludlow Castle, Mortimer and Clungunford.

The winning team is made up of Gayle Tipton, Rita Rogers, Cheryl Evans, Denise Partridge, Sheila Lewis, Jan Roberts, Mary Jones, Barbara Mantle, Camilla Parsonage, Viv Cooper, Wendy Davies, Rose Parker and Abbey Partridge.

The club plays its matches on either a Tuesday or Wednesday and will be looking to secure a 24th straight league success in 2015.

Meanwhile, Tipton, Roberts and Jones were also successful in a ladies triples match at Craven Arms. They beat home bowlers Doreen Edwards, Lillian Payne and Linda Reeves by one shot.
